"This edition of the Glossary and index of terms to The Encyclopaedia of Islam incorporates volume IX, which was published in December 1997. A change in title, omitting the adjective 'technical' to describe the terms, is meant to more accurately define the contents of this volume. The basis of the index was laid by Hakeem Uddeen Qureshi (vols. I-III) and Jos van Lent (vols. IV to VIII), whose work was then collated, augmented and edited by Peri Bearman (supplement, vol. IX), who also has begun the process of adding terms and entries missing in the first two editions."--Preface.
